One of the most potentially detrimental aspects of poverty is difficulty accessing necessary health care, especially given the current COVID-19-related circumstances. People in need of free healthcare are at higher risk for contracting COVID-19, and are more likely to work in jobs where work hazards are common, paid sick leave is rare and they often have difficulty understanding and navigating the complex U.S. healthcare system. It is even more important that our uninsured and under-insured neighbors address acute illnesses or injuries as soon as they appear and have the resources to keep any comorbidity under control.
