I recently joined the board of Trustus Theatre, the home for relevant, innovative, and inclusive theatrical works. Started in a second floor walk-up space by Kay and Jim Thigpen, Trustus has evolved to a half a million dollar enterprise over the last four decades. By opening its doors in the warehouse space on Lady Street, Trustus helped establish the Congaree Vista Arts District to create a vibrant, lasting impact on Columbia’s arts scene. Trustus has not had a major renovation to the mainstage side of the building sense it was purchased in 1989. For the safety of performers, staff, and audience members, updates to the structure of the building are a necessity. These updates include addressing electrical inconsistencies, improving stage structure, refurbishing backstage, and getting up to SC State code with sprinklers, and updated plumbing.
