If you’re looking for proof that Able South Carolina changes lives and that independent living programs work—I’m a success story. After a life-changing illness in 2011, I began working with an Independent Living Specialist at Able. They helped me accept my diagnosis, become independent, and feel proud of myself and my disability. I also participated in Equip, Able’s youth program, where I gained tools, found community, & had fun. In 2022, I saw Able was hiring AmeriCorps members and jumped at the chance. That experience showed me how passionate I am about serving my community, the disability community. In March 2024, when the Upstate Independent Living Specialist position opened, I knew I had to apply. How amazing would it be to help others the way someone helped little me?
