Bull Swamp Baptist Church Colored School Preservation and Community Center Project

Fundraiser Story

In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt's Works Progress Administration allocated $3,000 to construct a significant early American 3 class-room wooden-frame school for African American students in Orangeburg, South Carolina. This institution became a cornerstone of education and community life during the era of segregation. Nearly a century later, we are restoring this historic site to serve the community and surrounding areas once again.

Today, we are committed to restoring and repurposing this historic site to serve future generations. Our goal is to raise $33,600 to complete key tasks from Preservation Phase I and begin Phase II:  The Community Repurposing of this historic building and site.

Bull Swamp Colored School "Year of Life Capital Campaign":

We invite individuals to contribute an amount inspired by their birth year.  For those born between 2000 and 2010, or for businesses founded during those years, we suggest a contribution of $10.00 or more.  Another example, if you were born in 1958, we encourage a donation of $58.00 or more.

Joining the "112 Capital Campaign":

We're also seeking 112 individuals or businesses to contribute $300 or more to lead the charge in preserving this vital landmark. Donors will be recognized for their leadership and vision.

Your donation helps preserve a piece of American history-and creates a space that can uplift, educate, and inspire for generations to come.

About the Organization

The 1936 Bull Swamp Colored School was once a hub of activity for the rural Bull Swamp Baptist Church and surrounding communities. Like many historical structures that have survived, many remain in disrepair. Our Mission is to Restore, Repurpose and Resurrect this structure to it's former glory. Because the school was deeded to the Church from Orangeburg District Five for the expressed and documented purpose of developing a "Community Center," we are honored with this endeavor to comply.
