Fundraiser Story
In November 2023, Talon went hunting with his uncle, but he couldn't make it to the deer stand and back without having to sit down. He was also covered in bruises. Concerned, we took him to his pediatrician, and his hemoglobin was dangerously low at 4.3. "Leukemia" was mentioned, and we rushed to MUSC Children's ER. His platelets and neutrophils were critically low. The Hematology/Oncology team quickly began investigating, and though leukemia was ruled out, the doctors were still unsure of the cause.
After a bone marrow biopsy, Talon was diagnosed with Severe Idiopathic Aplastic Anemia, a rare and serious condition where the bone marrow fails to produce enough blood cells. He started ATG therapy, which he tolerated well, but he faced several infections and a G-tube for medications and nutrition. By July 2024, it was decided he needed a bone marrow transplant. He went through rounds of chemotherapy, ATG therapy, and total body radiation before his transplant on November 12, 2024.
Though the transplant went well initially, Talon's condition worsened with viral infections, including CMV, EBV, and C-diff. He was moved to the PICU for respiratory distress and intubated multiple times. Over the following weeks, he needed procedures to clear his airway and was placed on dialysis due to kidney failure. He spent over 2 months in the PICU and 4 months in the hospital. Today, he continues regular clinic visits twice a week.
This journey has been isolating for our family, as Talon has missed school and has had to be kept safe from infections. We've found comfort in organizations like Happy Wheels. Talon first encountered Happy Wheels when he was admitted for infections. Despite being shy, he always enjoyed selecting toys like Legos, Rubik's cubes, and Squishmallows. During transplant, the Happy Wheels cart was a highlight during long hospital stays, offering small distractions and comfort. Even during clinic visits, Talon looks forward to the cart's cheerful stop.
Happy Wheels brings joy to children who are enduring tough times. I encourage anyone who can to support this cause-help bring a smile to a sick child and make their day a little brighter.
