As a disabled person and Director of Youth Transition Programs at Able SC, this work is deeply personal. I live with overgeneralized autobiographical memory, and I know how powerful it is when young people with disabilities are supported to lead their own lives. At Able SC, we center disabled voices—not as charity, but as a civil right. We help youth find their paths to college, work, and independence. But today, our mission is at risk. Calls to end DEI, rising ableist rhetoric, and a false narrative about fraud have put critical funding in jeopardy. We’re seeing a wave of backlash that paints people with disabilities as less than human. Now more than ever, we need support. We are an organization of people with disabilities leading the charge to: Equip people with disabilities with tools to foster pride and to direct their own lives; Educate the community to challenge stereotypes and eliminate barriers; and Advocate for access, equity, and inclusion at the individual, local, state, and national level.
