Fundraiser Story
Our sweet Grayson was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of seven. He was completely healthy and active until that day that our world came crashing down. We had no idea that our son was living with a cancerous tumor the size of a tangerine in his brain. We found out through a ct scan that his Dr ordered after a football injury. I can remember very vividly what I was wearing that day, what he was wearing, what the nurse looked like that came to take me to the family room. I remember collapsing to the floor when they told me there was a mass in his brain. My beautiful, blonde haired, blue eyed perfect child was very sick. How did we not know? Surgery was scheduled the following week on October 31st, 2012. I can still remember the sterile smell of the glue that was used on his perfect little head. I can still remember the long scar that went from his head down his neck. I can remember the night before his surgery, I took probably ten pictures of that perfect little head and neck. I remember washing his hair that night knowing it would have to be shaved off in the back. How could this be happening? The children I was used to seeing on St. Jude commercials, they seemed so far away, never crossed my mind that I would be living that life. Our children were healthy and happy. We had done all of the things right… how did this happen? The night of the surgery my husband and I just sat and stared at him. He was so beautiful and sleeping so well from the pain medicine. I couldn't wait for him to wake up and talk to me… only he didn't… not until January … when he finally started talking to me and making sentences again. He had to relearn how to walk, talk, use his hands and arms, he had to relearn it all. He was in the hospital a total of 81 days straight. Those days included six weeks of radiation five days a week, and chemo for six months. The days were long, and the stress and worry were so real. But, I can say that The Lord was with us always through it all. During those months and weeks he would spend in the hospital he always looked forward to Happy Wheels coming by on Wednesdays! These children, they don't have a lot of chances to make choices on their own while they are laying there in the hospital beds, waiting on the next poke, the next treatment, the next nasty medicine they have to take. But when they see that colorful cart filled with so many goodies and comfort items coming, they smile and light up the room! Their little frowns turn into smiles, and they have a reason to get out of that bed, they get to make a choice! They get to choose an item off of the cart! Whatever they want… it's theirs! No bribing or ouchies involved, just a gift, a completely free gift that is given with love and hope! Our sweet boy definitely had gotten his share of gifts from the cart over his many years of being in and out of the hospital. He had an amazing idea to give back to the Happy Wheels cart during one of his annual Christmas projects. He chose to have a toy collection and all toys would be donated to Happy Wheels! There were SO many toys collected we lost count, but the joy that we had just knowing first hand where those toys were going and what they were for was priceless! It has been a long journey for our family. Grayson has battled cancer, a recurrence (which was labeled as terminal back in 2014) yes, you read that correctly 2014! But God had other plans and our sweet son is still here and living his testimony out that God gave him. What a blessing! God healed our son, and after years of sickness from treatment, seizures, a blood clot, radiation injury to the brain stem, a tracheostomy, and ventilator, but most of all, FAITH, by the grace of God he is still here! He is 18 years old now and he absolutely loves being able to give back to his community and to all of those that have been with us in this journey for all of these years. He made this goal of $6000 to raise for Happy Wheels and we would be so excited to meet that goal! That is Grayson's wish for this page, is to see that happen!
