Ruthie Loves Happy Wheels!

Happy Wheels has meant so much more to our family than we ever could have imagined. For Ruthie, it’s been a bright light during some of the hardest moments of her life. Her hospital stay for a bone marrow transplant at MUSC was incredibly tough, but Thursdays completely changed the mood of the week. They became something to look forward to—her favorite day. Ruthie would light up with excitement, waiting for the cart to come by, knowing there would be a surprise toy or book and, just as importantly, the warm, genuine smiles from the volunteers who made her feel so special.

Even after discharge, that joy didn’t fade. Clinic visits became a little easier because Ruthie knew Happy Wheels might be there. The word “surprise” alone was enough to lift her spirits. We first experienced the cart when Ruthie was just 2 years old, and now, as she’s almost 7, she still asks before every visit if she’ll get to see Happy Wheels.

 What makes it even more meaningful is that Happy Wheels truly feels like family—they’ve stayed in touch with us over the years, praying for Ruthie, encouraging her, and checking in on her journey. That kind of love and consistency is something we’ll never forget. We are incredibly grateful for what this organization has brought not only to Ruthie, but to so many families on the 10th floor. One day, each week throughout the year, Happy Wheels volunteers make rounds to each inpatient room with a decorated surgical cart filled with brand new books and toys. Happy Wheels visits approximately 400 children weekly at all 3 children's hospitals in South Carolina. Each child gets to pick out one toy/book of their choice every week for the duration of their admission. They get to keep the gifts and take them home! It's like a birthday present EVERY SINGLE week. Can you imagine the smiles this brings?!
