One Step Changes Everything

When James walked into the gym that morning, he stayed close to the wall.

His sneakers were two sizes too small. The toes were worn thin, and the soles had started to separate. He didn’t run much at recess anymore. He didn’t jump as high in P.E. And when his classmates lined up for games, he sometimes hung back.

Then he sat down in a folding chair across from one of our volunteers.

They talked about his favorite subject in school. About how fast he could run. About how he wanted to play basketball when he got older. One by one, he tried on new sneakers. Too tight. Too loose. Not quite right.

Until finally, just the right fit.

He stood up.

He took a few steps.

Then he jumped.

And jumped again.

New shoes for one little boy meant jumping higher, running faster, and room for growing toes. But it meant something more, too. It meant confidence. It meant belonging. It meant no longer sitting on the sidelines.

That day, James didn’t leave with just new socks and sneakers. He left knowing he was seen, valued, and cared for.

This is why we serve.

Because one pair of shoes may seem small—but to a child, it can change everything.

And step by step, child by child, we are walking out love in action.
