James L. Greene Mathematics Scholarship

James L Greene was born and raised in East Orange, New Jersey.  An honor student at East Orange High School, he lettered in both baseball and football.  He attended Johnson C Smith University on a football scholarship.  After graduating Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, he completed a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree in Computer Science at Temple University.  

In his professional career, James worked at Johnsville Naval Air Development Center in Warminster, Pennsylvania, where he ran simulations on the F-15 aircraft. He retired from International Business Machines Corporation (IBM) as a System’s Engineering Manager.  Retirement work included jobs with Oracle, SAP and as Vice President for Business Development at Main Sail, LLC.

While living in South Jersey with his family, James trained as a crisis counselor, spending many 12-hour shifts volunteering for Contact 609 Phone Hotline. He was an adjunct professor of Computer Science at Atlantic Community College and enjoyed chess, billiards, and golf in his spare time.

After moving south, James tutored math for 9 years at Little River Presbyterian Church in Blair, South Carolina.  Every student was encouraged to explain their processes to demonstrate proficiency. This scholarship will support a student whose excellence in mathematics matches James Greene’s love of the discipline.
