The Weight of Words Society, Inc. (W.O.W) and Young Writers Society (YWS) was formed after seeing the weight of social unrest within communities. It now serves as a key community cornerstone and platform for young inspiring writers and artists. W.O.W. changes the trajectory of trauma through the arts and extracts creativity to help amplify voices that would otherwise be unheard. Youth create stories, work, and productions that showcase the things that they are most passionate about, but often can't put into words until after a workshop or introduction to an art form. YWS also enables artists to curate, celebrate, and orchestrate their deferred dreams into actualities both hoped for or achieved. These stories and exposure to the arts provides an outlet for the underrepresented, overlooked, and ignored. Through dance, spoken word, photography, theater, painting and literacy youth are afforded the opportunity to dream and create by using the arts as a vehicle for healing. Students who attend a workshop or participate in our programming are often writing poetry, picking up a paintbrush, camera, performing or speaking about their art and their lived experiences for the first time
