Orangeburg Area Sickle Cell Anemia Foundation

The mission of the agency is to enhance productive lifestyles of individuals with Sickle Cell diseases through the provision of supplementary health services supportive of medical treatment. To educate the public concerning Sickle Cell Anemia, reduce the suffering of Sickle Cell patients and their parents by assisting them with basic human needs and medical services, improve the quality of life of children suffering from Sickle Cell Anemia.

We organized the Sickle Cell Foundation in 1974 and chartered with the Secretary of State in 1976 as a non-profit organization. With 48 years of helping patients with Sickle Cell Disease, the foundation work with (6) six counties: Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, Orangeburg counties with their Sickle Cell needs.
The idea for the Orangeburg Area Sickle Cell Anemia was conceived in July 1974 by a group of concerned employees of the Orangeburg County Health Department when a Sickle Cell relief fund was established. The purpose was to assist patients financially with Sickle Cell Anemia emergency medical services. As other individuals in the community also actively expressed interest in addressing the financial, medical, and social needs of the community at risk, the organization OASCAF was founded November 17, 1975. The organization became incorporated as a non-profit agency in 1976. We presently serve more than 110 Sickle Cell families through referrals, counseling, and education. Approximately 30-40 families are tested per month.

We have a total of about 179 patients throughout the (6) six counties: Aiken, Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Calhoun, Orangeburg counties. We assist on keeping the lights on and also assisting with their prescription for medication. Some patients require monitoring equipment, so we assist with the utility bill to make sure the electricity is not disconnected. Unfortunately, in some cases the electricity was disconnected while a patient was in the hospital, so their utility provider has to be ca
