Literacy SC (formerly Turning Pages SC) believes in a world where anyone can move up and ahead through the power of reading. So we teach adults and families reading, writing and math to build everyday confidence.

Open since 1968, we have passed through a lot of different leaders and structures. Right now, under the leadership of CEO Lisa Cole, we partner with local libraries, churches and private businesses across central South Carolina to deliver impactful learning experiences through volunteer-led weekly tutoring and staff-led live classes.

What We Do

We teach adults and families reading, writing, and math to build everyday confidence.

In South Carolina, nearly 1 in 5 adults lacks foundational text skills to read through forms at a doctor’s visit, sign a contract, or help their child with homework. This is a major barrier to a better job, a safer home, and a more confident life. We are here to break that barrier.

We provide high-intensity, one-on-one adult basic education (ABE) sessions at zero cost to the learner as well as next step low cost classes for those seeking more advanced skills. With 41+ partner sites across central South Carolina including major systems like Richland Library, Lexington County Public Library, and ABBE Regional Library System and a clear roadmap for further expansion, we are turning "I can't read" into "Wow, I just read that!" for countless South Carolians.

Literacy SC is a debt-free, cash-in-hand nonprofit built for high-impact agility and direct results. Aside from our CEO, every member of our team is a specialist devoted entirely to direct program delivery and learner success. Our roles are hybrid, flexible, and fully resourced, allowing us to remain mean and lean while serving the entire state of South Carolina.

• $50 (Tutor Hero): Provides one tutor-learner pair with everything they need to complete four 1-hour weekly private sessions in our Turning Pages Adult Reading Program. 

• $200 (Classroom Hero): Funds the curriculum and supplies for one adult learner to complete eight 1-hour group classes in one of our no-cost ABE programs.

• $1,000 (Chapter Master): Funds all curriculum and supplies for one adult to complete a full Literacy SC chapter's worth (40) of 1-hour group classes.
