Literacy SC

We believe in a world where anyone can move up and ahead through the power of reading. So, we teach adults and families practical reading, writing and math skills to build confidence in daily life. Our core service, the Turning Pages Adult Reading Program, teaches adults to read through personalized one-on-one tutoring that is free of cost. Adults who read below a 9th grade level can gain access to 50+ hours of free tutoring annually plus all books.

At Literacy SC, we teach adults to read, write, and do basic math.

Since 1968, we've helped thousands in central South Carolina gain these vital life skills!

Reading opens doors. It means being able to:
• Read labels at the grocery store
• Fill out job applications
• Understand medical instructions
• Help children with homework
• Read bedtime stories to family

One in five adults in South Carolina struggles with reading.
Many have hidden this challenge for years.
They are our neighbors, coworkers, and friends.

Our core Turning Pages Adult Reading Program is free and private.
We match each adult learner with a trained tutor who works with them one-on-one.
Together, they build both skills and confidence at a comfortable pace.

In 2025, we expanded from Turning Pages SC to become Literacy SC!

We now offer:
• Group reading classes for unhoused adults (free)
• Workforce ESOL Workshops (low cost)
• Modern Study Skills Workshops (low cost)
• Practical Math Workshops (low cost)

Every day, we see courage in action.
Our learners take brave first steps to change their lives.
Some start at a first-grade reading level.
Others want to improve existing skills.
