For more than 25 years, the Dyslexia Resource Center has served families in the Midlands by offering evidence-based instruction to students who struggle with reading. From 2016 through 2021, we trained more than 110 teachers and tutors in the Orton-Gillingham approach. In 2019, we launched Reading Intervention Starts Early (RISE), an initiative to train volunteers to work with economically disadvantaged K-1 students. We have also shared our knowledge with hundreds of parents through free workshops.
In 2024, we enrolled 8 tutors in Evidence-based Literacy Instruction (EBLI) to equip them with a speech-to-print approach to teaching literacy. Recommended for students with ADHD and/or slow processing speed, the approach offers instruction in a streamlined, highly interactive manner. Preliminary data indicates that EBLI accelerates learning, even for our most challenged students. In the past, progress for students with severe dyslexia required years of tutoring. EBLI has shortened their learning curve.
We now have tutors using the approach best suited to each student. While these approaches benefit all learners, they are essential for students with dyslexia.
To see [my son] make such great strides of progress under your tutoring has made our hearts full. Please be encouraged knowing that the work you are doing is not only changing the lives of the children you work with but their whole families. Thank you so much!-parent of a DRC student
