Cancer is the #1 disease killer of children in America, devastating entire families. 1 in 5 children do not survive, and children of rural or poor families face 3X greater risk for missed or late diagnosis, under treatment, relapse or death.
More than 200 SC children are diagnosed each year, joining over 3,000 already in treatment or survivorship. Household income plummets while treatment travel costs soar, and most families need help urgently.
There is only one pediatric oncology facility in the Midlands, with limited services, so children must be transported to Charleston or Greenville. If they require specialized care, they're often flown to New York, Texas, Pennsylvania, or beyond for more specialized treatments. We have 56 Midlands families depending on us right now, one who just lost their child, and the National Cancer Institute population models project 20-22 more diagnoses there each year.
An ongoing flu for 16-month-old Blyth Lyons led to a scary and unexpected diagnosis: stage II neuroblastoma.
"You always think that it will not be you. You always think your family is safe," Brittany Lyons, Blyth's mom, said. " I honestly never believed, because we do not have cancer in our family, that our 16-month-old would be the one."
After four rounds of chemo and a procedure in Ohio, Blyth is now in remission! He'll still need check-ups, and Children's Cancer Partners will be there-just as we are for 2,500+ families each year.
"Children's Cancer Partners of the Carolinas has always been there and made us feel like they were right there with us every step of the way," Brittany
