Boykin Spaniel Rescue, Inc. is a 501c3 nonprofit, dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of at-risk Boykin Spaniels-- the South Carolina Sate Dog. Formed in 2001, we have cared for well over 1600 Boykin Spaniels. With the increase in the popularity of the breed, we are seeing an increase in intakes as well as complexity of care required.
BSR is a nationwide, virtual, organization. We have over 680 volunteers throughout the United States. These volunteers identify, transport and foster dogs, as well as work on fundraising events, administration and more. We are incredibly grateful for the time and dedication of our volunteers - most with little to no notice if we have an urgent case.
Boykin Spaniel Rescue has had a Platinum Seal of Transparency with Guidestar for the last four (6) years, as well as rate "Top NonProfit" with GreatNonProfits. We also enjoy a 100% rating with Charity Navigator. We believe that we need to be good stewards of the faith placed in us and run our Organization as we care for our dogs-- with dedication and a passion for doing it right.
BSR cares for the most vulnerable Boykin Spaniels-- the State dog of South Carolina. We go to great lengths to determine the needs of each individual dog. Many time it takes our medical care team, in conjunction with local veterinarians and specialists from universities and practices around the country to uncover what is happening with a dog, and get that dog to adoptability if at all possible. Such was the case with Avery.
Avery came to BSR as a very young, though awkardly moving pup. After several months in care and catching up to her growth curve, Avery was taken to an orthopedic specialist to investigate her bowed legs. The astute vet, however, felt her situation was not orthopedic at all but rather centered on some kind of neurological issues that affected her gait and forearm posture on one side as well as her eyesight on that side. Recommending advanced diagnostics to determine what was going on and what could be treated, Avery had an MRI. To everyone's shock, Avery actually had a congenital brain malformation in which a large section of her left lobe was never developed. Remarkably, missing the majority of the left hemisphere of her brain had no personality or progressive issues which would render her unadoptable. In fact, she was always exuberant and energetic! Avery was made available as a "special needs" Boykin and her forever family welcomed her into their home, loving her for exactly who she was! Her birthday brought around a princess party, as well as a huge bucket of tennis balls! Avery is living her very best life!
