“My people will live in peaceful dwelling places, in secure homes, in undisturbed places of rest.” — Isaiah 32:18
As a ministry of the South Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church, Aldersgate offers safe, loving homes for adults with developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorders. Although we are a ministry of the Conference, we do not receive apportionment funding and rely on the generosity of individuals, churches, and community partners to sustain this work.
Across our homes, residents are encouraged to grow in independence, build meaningful relationships, and live in an environment shaped by Christian love and dignity. Our trained staff walk alongside each resident, offering support, stability, and daily care rooted in compassion.
Adults with special needs remain among the most underserved populations in South Carolina and across the nation. As caregivers age and long‑term needs increase, the demand for safe, faith‑centered housing continues to grow. Today, Aldersgate operates six homes throughout the state — each one a place of belonging, purpose, and hope.
“I will give You thanks, for You answered me; You have become my salvation.”
-Psalm 118:21
JT'S STORY-- A Safe Place To Grow
When JT’s family entered a difficult season, they needed a place where he could be safe, supported, and surrounded by people who truly understood his needs. His sister, balancing caregiving, work, and nursing school, longed for a home where JT wouldn’t be alone and where he could build meaningful connections.
Aldersgate became that home.
Since moving into our Orangeburg house in 2020, JT has flourished. He’s formed strong friendships with his housemates, built confidence through daily routines, and found comfort in a community that treats him with dignity and kindness. The staff who care for him do so with patience, joy, and genuine love — the kind of love that reflects Christ in every interaction.
Today, JT is not just safe. He is thriving. He laughs more, engages more, and enjoys the fullness of life in a home where he is known and valued.
XAVIER'S STORY-- A Future Filled With Possibility
Xavier’s journey to Aldersgate began with uncertainty. Limited life‑skills training and a challenging learning environment made it difficult for him to find stability. His aunt, who lovingly stepped in to care for him, worried about his future and longed for a place where he could grow with support and compassion.
Through the Department of Disabilities and Special Needs, Xavier found his way to Aldersgate — and everything began to change.
With the encouragement of our dedicated staff, Xavier is learning new skills, building independence, and discovering strengths that bring him joy. He communicates through gestures, eye contact, and his warm, expressive personality. He loves participating in activities, spending time with his housemates, and — of course — being complimented on his sharp outfits.
Ask him if he likes living at Aldersgate, and his answer is always the same: “Yes!”
Xavier’s story is a reminder that with the right support, every person can grow, flourish, and experience the fullness of God’s love.
