What does it mean to be American?

As our nation approaches its 250th anniversary, that question feels more relevant than ever.

It’s a question explored through history, culture, and everyday life—and one that resonates deeply in communities across South Carolina.

Through the Museum on Main Street initiative, we have the opportunity to bring the Smithsonian’s Americans exhibition to small towns and rural communities across our state.

This is more than an exhibit. It is a catalyst for conversation.

A National Program, A Local Impact

Museum on Main Street is a national partnership between the Smithsonian Institution and state humanities councils across the country.

For more than two decades, this program has brought high-quality Smithsonian exhibitions to small towns—places that often don’t have access to major cultural institutions.

Each exhibition travels to multiple communities, where local organizations add their own stories, voices, and perspectives—making every stop unique.

Through this model, national history meets local experience.

Bringing the Smithsonian to South Carolina

With your support, the Americans exhibition will travel to communities across South Carolina—appearing in libraries, museums, and community spaces where it can reach the widest possible audience.

The exhibition explores how we express identity through culture, objects, and everyday life, connecting national themes to local realities.

For many communities, this will be a rare opportunity to experience a Smithsonian exhibition close to home.

Why This Matters

At a time when meaningful conversation can feel increasingly difficult, the humanities create space for reflection, dialogue, and connection.

This exhibition will:

  • Spark community conversations about identity and culture
  • Provide educational opportunities for students and families
  • Support local cultural organizations and leaders
  • Create shared experiences that bring people together
