Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired SC

A nonprofit organization

Our mission is to empower individuals who are blind or have low vision to live fulfilling, purpose-driven lives.

ABVI, a nonprofit founded in 1936, provides life-changing vision rehabilitation services across South Carolina to help people with vision loss adjust to life without their disability. Serving people of all ages, ABVI offers training in daily living skills, assistive technology, braille, travel techniques and more. Services help people gain functionality, live more independently, and improve their quality of life.

Testimonials

Thomas suffered a stroke brought on by Covid and when he awoke, he could no longer see. He was scared, hopeless, and he did not know where to turn for the help he needed to learn to live with his vision loss.
Thomas eventually found ABVI and began training to develop adaptive skills and new approaches to daily tasks. He developed skills that helped him walk safely with a white cane, travel in public independently, read braille to access information on elevators and other public signage, use his smartphone to plan travel routes and more. Thomas told us, "[i]f ABVI wasn't here, I would probably still be sitting at home, going out of mind… super depressed. They're just so helpful."
