Founded in 1936, the mission of Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired South Carolina (ABVI) is to empower individuals who are blind or low vision to lead fulfilling, purpose-driven lives. ABVI offers comprehensive vision rehabilitation and educational services for individuals of all ages throughout South Carolina and beyond.

For most teens, high school is a time to build friendships, gain independence, and discover who they are. But for teens who are blind or low vision, these moments can feel isolating.

ABVI created S.E.L.E.C.T.* so no teen has to navigate this journey alone. S.E.L.E.C.T. stands for Social Events Lead to Empowering Confident Teens.

Meet Emma.

Emma has progressive hearing and vision loss caused by Alström Syndrome, a rare genetic condition. When she signed up for her first S.E.L.E.C.T. event, Make Up and Me, she was anxious.

“My mom thought it would be good for me to be around other people my age who are also blind. I was nervous at first.”

But that quickly changed. As she began talking with other teens, Emma realized she wasn’t alone. The group shared stories, laughed together, and exchanged tips on navigating daily life. By the end of the day, she had made new friends and found a place where she felt she truly belonged.

That single experience built confidence she’ll carry into her future.

Through S.E.L.E.C.T., teens gain more than practical skills like job readiness and self-advocacy. They gain connection, confidence, and a sense of possibility. And right now, more teens like Emma are waiting for that opportunity.
