The mission of the Newberry County Literacy Council is to empower adults and families to strengthen essential literacy skills including reading, writing, digital, financial, and health literacy—to achieve economic stability and lifelong success. Through accessible, community-based education, the Council advances literacy as a catalyst for workforce readiness, effective parenting, informed decision-making, and active civic engagement. Our work supports individuals in building the skills needed for sustainable employment, stronger families, and more resilient communities.

Through the Newberry County Literacy Council Summer Enrichment Program, we will serve approximately 20 children in grades K thru 5th grade, providing structured, evidence-based reading instructions throughout the summer months.  Participants will receive small-group literacy instructions focused on phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary development, and comprehension, supported by culturally relevant texts and hands-on learning activities. By the end of the program, at least 50 percent of participants are expected to demonstrate measurable improvement in reading proficiency and increased confidence as independent readers. This program will help reduce summer learning loss and equipment students with the foundational literacy skills necessary for long-term academic success.
