Chapin Historical Association

A nonprofit organization

The Chapin Historical Association (CHA) was put in place to protect and preserve the Town's history and heritage, while serving as a springboard for future community preservation programs.

The CHA was formed in 2016 to assist the Town in protecting significant historical, cultural and aesthetic components that define our community's past. After an arduous four-year effort, spanning the terms of two mayors and their supportive Town Councils, 13 buildings in our downtown area, successfully advanced to a listing on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). These structures, located primarily along Beaufort Street and neighboring Clark Street and Old Lexington Highway are, hence, a "living museum" of years past, thereby raising citizen and visitor awareness of and pride in our community's roots.

Testimonials

The Chapin Commercial Historic District gained listing on the NRHP on October 7, 2019. Commemorative plaques have subsequently been place on contributing structures; and, in recent months, complementary District signage has been erected on the district boundary streets. Initial seed money for this costly and long Nomination effort was kicked off by a Greater Chapin Community Foundation grant. The CHA and the Town have begun planning for an official dedication ceremony for the District.
