I fell in love with Happy Wheels when I had the privilege of working as a Peds/Oncology nurse at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital, in the Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Unit. We had the most amazing, brave patients who fought tremendous battles each and every day! Many times, just getting through the mornings was a huge feat. The kiddos were more than remarkable, they were the epitome of heroes! But even heroes get tired, down, and very sad, struggling to get through the day. They endured more than any person, much less a kid, should ever have to endure. However, on Mondays, the Happy Wheels Cart would come around with the sweetest volunteers who let each and every child pick out a toy, book, puzzle or whatever was on that cart that made them feel happy. The smiles that Happy Wheels created was remarkable, in fact, it brings tears to my eyes remembering how much joy this organization brought to these sick children and their families. Every single item on the cart is brand new and donated by wonderful people who probably don’t even realize the impact they make on these children. And it’s not just for Littles, there are many teenagers and young adults in Children’s Hospital. There are items on the Happy Wheels cart for everyone, from infants to the oldest of teenagers. The pure joy of the children receiving something special during some of the worst of times in their lives is an experience I will never, ever forget! Fast forward many years, I now have the pleasure and privilege to be a part of this incredible organization in a very different way! I don’t have enough words to describe how grateful I am to be volunteering with Happy Wheels! Now, I will get to spread a little joy and soak in all of the beautiful moments of seeing a precious child find that special treat and hopefully make their day a little brighter. Happy Wheels solely depends on donors and I hope on this day of Midlands Gives, you will reflect on, not just my story, but many of the Happy Wheels stories and give from your heart to this wonderful charity! I promise you, the kids who benefit from Happy Wheels will never forget your kindness, support and generosity!

One day, each week throughout the year, Happy Wheels volunteers make rounds to each inpatient room with a decorated surgical cart filled with brand new books and toys. Happy Wheels visits approximately 400 children weekly at all 3 children's hospitals in South Carolina. Each child gets to pick out one toy/book of their choice every week for the duration of their admission. They get to keep the gifts and take them home!
